Does Windows 7 have a GM midi driver that supports soundfonts?
Otherwise is there a free solution?

No. Windows has never supported soundfonts directly, and I'm sure they
wouldn't start to include such an old, bygone technology now.

If you already have a VST host:

    Default soundfonts fix

Actually I wouldnt call general midi a bygone tech, it is still pretty much alive, and offer better midi playback then the default midi synth of windows.

I found an easy way to enable soundfont plackback if you have hardware support for it (most creative sb cards have it..), it actually was posted as fix for vista but also works for 7.
    for full details go to:
MIDI and Vista - Creative Labs
you dont really need to install dosbox and look for what is your midi bank, should be 1, 0 being the windows midi synth.

So you only need to change one key in the registry.
in regedit search for midioutid and change its value to 00000001
now media player will use the soundfont bank instead of the midisynth.
(note you'll have to do that for each account you want to have soundfont)
