Default Live Mail over wifi access point in public

At home I connect to the internet via my ISP broadband modem. I use Windows Live Mail as an email client on my home PC.

I have just purchased a wifi enabled netbook (Samsung N230) which I intend to use for email and internet browsing when
travelling abroad. I set up the Windows Live Mail client on the netbook exactly as on my PC and tested the netbook by
connecting it to my broadband modem and all works well. I can send and receive email on the netbook exactly as on my PC.

When I connected the netbook to the internet via the wifi system in my public library, I could access the internet via
my Internet Explorer browser but I could not read my email with the Live Mail email client.

Please let me know how I should set up my email client on the netbook so that I can receive and send email via public
    wifi access points.

    Many thanks,

    Johannes van Vuren.

It is quite normal that you can't send over a port 25 SMTP server when your
Internet connection is coming from a different network provider. However,
it is *not* normal that you are unable to receive. That receive problem
should be tackled first. Is there an error message when you try to receive?
If so, right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

You really don't want to do that.

Your user name and password are sent in clear text. readable, and logged by
the access point you use. If you must use public access points, use your
https webmail access. If you want to use your email app on public access
points, you should seek a reliable VPN provider to protect your
    privacy/identify.

BTW, https webmail access should allow you to send email, which you probably
won't be able to do with your email app connected to a public access
    provider.

If you are using SSL with the servers, your password as well as message
contents are encrypted between the PC and server.

Many, but not all, mail services support SSL.
