MIE 8 behaving strangely
When I do a google search and click on any of the links in the resuklts I'm
not getting to the links, I'm getting other webpages. I downloaded Firefox
and tried that and it did the same. Whats happening?

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
You haven't told us anything about these "other pages" but most likely
your computer is infected with adware.

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
For example I google 'download eraser' and click on
eraser.heidi.ie
and get
http://www.blinkx.com/category/enter...A51BF5C3C0&p=1

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - I find it much better at finding things than
Adaware, and having another tool in your collection is no bad thing.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
and also HijackThis
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/
The blinkx.com redirection looks to be very much the result of some
malware/adware running on your system, possibly due to a proxy server
running on your local PC.

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
Can't get Hijack this to run with Vista. It says for vista right click on
the icon in the start program and choose 'run as administrator' but that
option doesn't come up.

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
You are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!
NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!
Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...prid=7552&st=1
Also available via...
Consumer Security Support home page
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/
Otherwise...
1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx
NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.
2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm
3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
Thanks for your help the MSRT has been running 8 hours and is 80% done and
the onecare live scan had also been going 8 hrs and is 19% done, so it looks
like another 30 hours or so at least. Don't know if that sounds normal (2 x
500Gb HD's). The second one says 195 items detected and 9 ussues found (in
red).
Windows and AVG antivirus were up to date. It almost sounds easier to
re-install windows , which I have done several times.

Re: MIE 8 behaving strangely
Other than be redirected to odd websites when I click on search engines
hits, there are no other ill effects on the PC at the moment. If I copy and
paste the hoits (URLS) into the address bar then it goes there OK?
