    Default Outlook 2003 on Windows 7 can not connect to Exchange Server 2003 on XP Server

    I have Outlook 2003 on Windows 7 desktop and can not connect to Exchange Server 2003 on an XP Server. I setup the exchange server account as usual and verified the name, however when I launch Outlook 2003 on the Windows 7 machine it does not connect, just sits and spins. I resolved the networking issue between the Windows 7 machine and the XP servers. Other programs that require data files on the XP servers appear to function correctly and I have no issues seeing and accessing the XP machines in the network.

    Hi Craig,

    In Outlook make sure Password Authentication(NTLM) is set.

    Account Settings>Change>More Settings>Security>Change "Negotiate Authentication" to "Password Authentication(NTLM)".

    Then restart Outlook and fingers crossed..

    Did the above, then crossed my fingers, arms, legs, feet and prayed to the Murphy God but no luck. I contunually asks me for my (Administrator) password. I have checked it on other machines using xp and it works. The password should be remembered when I log-in the windows 7 machine accesses the xp servers (it does not ask me and allows me to access the files on the machines). Apparently it is NOT accepting my password.
    Any good Ideas?

    Hi Craig,

    do you have access to the Exchange Server?

    If so can you check the application log on the server and see if there are any entries for around the time you tried to log on.

    These may give us a clue as to what is going on.

    Yes, I have access to the Exchange Server. Where is the application log?

    it is in the Event Viewer.

    Start->Run->eventvwr

    When I Open -> Logfile, there are no files to choose from

    Cool The Solution

    Here is the solution for anyone that finds this forum and thread. It will also fix other issues, like finding other computers on the network and accessing the files on them. Some programs, like quickbooks, serviceCEO and others seem to work initially but are slow in accessing the data, this will fix those problems as well.

    On the client running Windows 7 do the following steps:
    1. Follow the insturctions at Windows 7 – Cannot connect to network drive « Eureka! (make sure to reboot your computer after the changes, only then will they work)
    2. Goto "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings" and change the following for both "Home or Work" and "Public":
    a: Turn on Network Discovery
    b: Turn on File and Printer Sharing
    c: Turn on sharing so anyone with network....
    d: Enable file sharing for devices that use 40- or 56- bit encryption
    e: Turn off password protected sharing
    f: Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

    It took me 3 days of research, reading, posting on forums, etc. to figure this out. It all revolves around Microsoft changing (in Windows 7) the encryption to 128bit and changing to their "new" networking concepts. Do you think that just maybe Microsoft could have put a few questions on the install of Windows 7, like: Are you going to be a network and access machines that are NOT window 7 such as Windows XP or Vista?

    Even though this REALLY frustrated and agrivated me, I have become a fan of windows 7 and do like some of it's new features, but it does takes some getting use to (learning curve).
